Background of Kashmir Dispute

The Indian princely states comprised roughly one-third of India’s territory and a quarter of the total population with independence approaching, Muslim majority areas should be from the territories of Pakistan, with Bengal and Punjab being partitioned. The Muslim Nizam of Hyderabad wanted independence but Indian troops entered the state in what was called “ police action” and Hyderabad became Indian. Nizam had advanced a lean-to Pakistan. He was therefore punished.

Geography of Kashmir

Kashmir technology the state of "Jammu and Kashmir" comprises distinct geographical and cultural areas, each with separate history. The most important economically and politically is Kashmir proper; a small province of about 2000 square miles south of Kashmir is the province of Jammu.

There was little homogeneity or unity among the population. In Kashmir province only 90% of the 2,000,000 inhabitants were Muslims and nearly all spoke Kashmiri or Kasheru. Jammu province has nearly 2,000,000 people who spoke, Dogri, and about 67% were about 80% Muslims. As already mentioned that the fighting broke out in Kashmir and on January 1, 1949, after the 14th month of battle, formal fighting stopped in Kashmir as the UNCIP ranged a cease-fire.

The significance of Kashmir to Pakistan is the same today as it was in 1947. Kashmir's problem is the most dangerous issue between India and Pakistan. It has a threat to the peace subcontinent.

Kashmir Issue/ Dispute And The UN

The United Nation council had decided to reform the agenda and outstanding issues like Palestine and Kashmir were to be dropped.

As a consequence of Pakistan’s timely intervention in the matter, Kashmir, the issue has been given a year's reprieve at the end of which term (ending September 15, 1947).

After a nuclear test by India and Pakistan, the issue once again received serious global attention. The Secretary-General of the United Nations has sent his special envoy to India and Pakistan who was not received in India, as she does not want third-party mediation.
