Important points of the Lucknow Pact

After joining the Muslim League in 1913 the Quaid-e-Azam started clearing the path of Hindu-Muslim Unity. in 1915 the annual meeting of Congress and the Muslim League were held together in Bombay because of his efforts. At last in 1916 once more the meeting of both parties was held together at  Lucknow where a written agreement was signed between the two parties. which in the history of the sub-continent is called the Lucknow Pact 1916.


CONDITIONS OF THE LUCKNOW PACT

The conditions of the Lucknow Pact 1916 are as follows.

1. APPROVAL OF SEPARATE ELECTRO RATE Congress will accept the separate electorate.

2. ONE-THIRD MUSLIM PRESENTATION The number of elected Muslim members in the center council will be one-third.

3. NOMINATION OF MEMBERS The proportion of elected and nominated members of councils 1/5 will be nominated members and 1/4 will be elected members of the councils.


4. PROPORTION OF MUSLIMS PRESENTATION IN THE PROVINCES In Muslim-majority provinces that as Bengal and Punjab the members of Muslim representatives were reduced to 40% in Bengal and 50% in Punjab.


5. AGREEMENT OF UNANIMOUS LAW No suggestions for continuation making will be considered.


6. CONDITIONS FOR APPROVAL DEMANDS FROM THE GOVERNMENT conditions were decided for approval of the following demands from the British Government

  • Increase in the autonomy of provinces
  • Freedom of determination
  • Separation of the judiciary from the administration

RESULT OF LUCKNOW PACT Historical results was achieved from the Lucknow pact, an overview of these is as follows.


i) APPROVAL FOR SEPARATE ELECTRO RATE The British had accepted the long-awaited demand for a separate electro rate for the Muslims of India by giving it a legal status in the Act of India 1909.


ii) SECURITY OF MUSLIMS RIGHTS AND INTERESTS According to the Lucknow Pact the acceptance to give more representations to Muslims than their population in the Muslim minority provinces.


iii) MUSLIM LEAGUE SEPARATE STATUS The Congress partially proved the importance of the Muslim League in the Sub-Continent by accepting the Muslim League as the representative party of Indian Muslims in the Lucknow Agreement.


iv) INCREASE IN THE FAME OF THE QUAID-E-AZAM The fame and capability of the Quaid-e-Azam spread because of Hindu-Muslim Unity. Mrs. Sarojini Naido while paying his tribute to the Quaid declared him the

"AMBASSADOR OF HINDU MUSLIM UNITY".

v) HINDU MUSLIM UNITY, FIRST AND LAST TIME Hindus tried to take revenge on Muslims in the Khilafat Movement generally and in the Nehru Report especially according to a planned conspiracy while neglecting the written, agreement of the Lucknow Pact in 1916.


COMMENTS

The Hindu Muslim Unity "The Lucknow Pact" 1916 has importance as a milestone in the history of the Sub-Continent, because of the Hindu Muslim Unity. The British government also gave legal protection to the rights and interests of Muslims in the Act of India 1919.
